Peddle Peddle Peddle
My parents came and whisked away Nathan for the night, so I jumped on the bike and knocked out a little 6.42 mile ride in 26:48, 4:11 per mile average. Legs felt stiff and dead about half way through.
Now though, since we are kid free for the night we’re taking the opportunity to celebrate Valentine’s day a little early and head out for dinner and a movie. Have fun!

Run, walk, run, walk, run
Ran a mile, walked half a mile, ran a mile, walked half a mile, ran .44 miles. 3.44 miles, 44:49.
Was bumming so perspective, a year ago I did 2.73 miles in 45:09, and weighed 20 lbs more than I do today. I was happy about both of those things. Yes, I’d like to be further along than I am, but as long as I get out of this rut and get going I’m fine. Make progress, not excuses.
Run!
Snuck in a quick run before swim lessons tonight. Tiffany has a new schedule where she gets off an hour earlier Tues-Fri which makes working on out on swim lesson days a little easier.
So tonight I did 3.42 miles, alternating a half mile run with a half mile walk. 48:10 overall. Legs still tighten up on the runs and bike rides, but no pain, still stick with run walk combos for now.
Also...
Another nice day
Jumped in the bike again pre-super bowl. 6.97 miles, 28:55, 4:09 per mile. Quads have a nice pump right now.
Now it’s time for the super bowl, don’t really care about either team so I’m pulling for some nice plays by a couple of my favorite former Ducks, Spencer Paysinger and Patrick Chung. Either way it goes one of them will get a ring.
Nice day... Jump on the bike
Another day back being active. Sun was shining, it was a little cold but nice for February, calm and no wind, so I jumped on the bike and did a nice little 7.1 mile bike ride. Total time 28:29, 4:01 per mile, little slower than before the break, but pretty close!
Good week of staying active after a couple month practically total shut down. 2 runs, with 3 miles of running, 1.8 miles of walking,...
Ran again
Twice in one week? Maybe I’m back. Ran a mile, walked a mile, ran a mile. 10:05 first mile, 11:13 second running mile. Pretty good times for me actually.
Some stiffness, but on the whole not bad. No pain to speak of. Hopefully get a good bike ride in this weekend. Feels good to be getting back in action.
Also I received an ask, I am still chew free. Still using the nicotine...

Run!
Just a quick little run, but looking at Nike+ its the first run since 1/4 and second run since 11/17. I think I’m missing a fun or two in between 11/17 and 1/4 after restoring my phone, but maybe not…
Either way, it slow and I took walk breaks whenever my leg and knee stiffened up. I ran 1 mile straight, than alternated run walks for another .8 of a mile. My quad, knee, hamstring...
I'm going to run tonight
Saying it so I have to do it. It won’t be far, it won’t be fast, but it will happen.
Go Go Go
Pretty busy day! Work, Physical Therapy, Cook Dinner, Swim Classes!
Physical Therapy was pretty good, lots of range of motion checks, stretching instructions, massage. He wants me to stretch a lot more than the Doctor was instructing me to do, so I’ll do that. Also gave me this band that I put around my ankles, squat and shuffle back and forth which should build up the muscles on the...
Rolling, Stretching, Standing
That’s what I’m about these days. Just foam rolled (hurts a little less each day), stretched (getting closer to my toes), and took turns standing on each leg (wobble wobble wobble). Feel like I’m slowly making progress.
Depending on the weather I should have my first full on physical therapy session tomorrow. Hopefully swimming on Wednesday, that also is weather dependent...
Bike ride
I said yesterday I was going for a bike ride. So. When the time came and it was pouring and 39, I put some workout pants on instead of shorts, grabbed my running jacket, and got the bike ready. Should have grabbed some gloves though.
Just did a short running loop though, 2.5 miles 12:35. Not very quick, not very far, but at least I got out there. Definitely have lost some fitness over the last...
Daily Wrap
Nice day with the family, we headed up to Portland and went to O.M.S.I. (Oregon Museum of Science and Industry). Spent a good 3 hours playing with all the exhibits. Tiffany had won admission through her work to see the body works exhibit, and today was the last day it was there. Pretty interesting stuff, but Nathan was in a big hurry to rush through it and get to the stuff you could touch and...
Doctor visit complete
Twice a week physical therapy, twice a day self foam rolling, follow up with this doctor in two weeks to check progress. Daily stretching, focus in on hamstrings which are extremely tight, and strengthening of some word that I forget that correlates to all the little muscles in your legs (stand on one leg for as long as you can eyes closed, then switch legs).
No running for now, swimming and...
One week
One week tobacco free, getting a little better each day. Follow up doctor appointment tomorrow, where I’ll be in pain but learning how to get better. Peaked at the scale, even splurging a bit, crazy sodium intake, lack of exercise, and general not worrying about weight loss for the last week, the scale is the same. Tomorrow is my “Friday” leading into a 4 day weekend. All in all not too shabby.
Quick update
My last few updates have just been, ok still alive, still quiting tabacco posts, so what’s going on?
Well, right now I’m just focusing on getting off tabacco. That means, lots of sun flower seeds, good amount of beef jerky, and nicotine lozenges. It sucks a lot of the time, so to eliminate any extra pressure I’m not tracking calories. At the same time I’m not going...
Day 5
Just might make it.
Daily Wrap
Nice relaxing day at home, with treks out to exchange a duplicate Christmas present Nathan received and to do the weekly grocery shopping. Not much else going on.
Day 4 in the books. Still on edge, still downing sodium, still tobacco free.
Bring on the sodium
Craving salty things like crazy. If I get through a week or two it’ll be fine. My blood pressure was really good 102/60, so extra salt won’t hurt right? For now non stop sunflower seeds, fills the salt craving, keeps my mouth busy.
Day 3 in the books. PS food was terrible again today, but that’s not the focus for a few days.
Go Lions!
Been a long wait, let’s hope it’s not a short trip.
Daily Wrap
I ate like crap today, was very on edge, my legs (quads mostly) were sore from yesterday’s Dr visit, my left arm is sore from the tetanus shot, and I feel a little crappy like I sometimes do after a flu shot.
But I’m not mad, day 2 chew free…
Foodly wrapity wrap for the day
Food was pretty solid today. Another rush around day so it was leftovers tonight (Ground turkey burritos).
1178 calories for the day.
As predicted I am really sore from the short run yesterday, mostly the outside of my right quad, and a stiff knee. But at least now I know what’s going on and a plan is being put in place.
PS I’m pretending nicotine lozenges have 0 calories, and...
Dr Visit
Went to the doctor today, and his conclusion was severe IT band issue. His specialty is actually sports medicine, so that’s kind of a good match in a primary care physician for now. I’m going back next week with my foam roller for physical therapy and to develop a good stretching routine.
Also got a couple of shots (tetanus and flu), good first meeting. Tridad will like that...

tridad replied to your photo: First “run” of the year in the books.
Oregon? Ouch. Rub it in why don’t you.
Sorry Badger fans. I know it was painful to see Auburn stuff for a few months after the National Title Game last year.

Pretty good day today. My knee hasn’t been hurting as much, mostly just stiff in the mornings, so I thought I’d try it out before the doctor’s visit tomorrow. It was ok, got a little sore, but really just stiffened up more. We’ll see how it responds over night, and then I can tell the doctor better whats going on tomorrow. The big difference is the endurance I lost over...

Stepped on the scale today to get my anniversary weigh in, and first weight of 2012. 193.0 today. One year ago I was down about my weight, totally inactive, and not doing anything about it. I was 234.8. I have a ways to go, but it’s still much better than a year ago, I need to keep that in mind when feeling down.
Food was good today. Brought a turkey sandwich and yogurt for lunch,...
Happy Birthday to @droppingthelbs
westcoastrunner:
Hope you are having a fantastic birthday Josh!!
Sorry I missed this earlier! Thank you so much!
So long vacation
My time off from work is over tomorrow. With the return to work, and the holiday season in the rear view, I also return to daily blogging, and strict dieting.
After my doctors visit later this week to check out the knee, I’ll get a exercise plan in place (hopefully running will be allowed, but we’ll figure out something.
Tomorrow also marks the one year anniversary of this blog....

Merry Christmas everyone
Haven’t posted lately but thought I’d pop on to say Hi and Merry Christmas. Hope you are able to enjoy time with friends and family.
Hi there
Haven’t checked in for a while, but I’m still around. Knee is still bugging me, and my food is more mediocre than great, but at least the scale is staying the same. I found a new primary care physician today, and booked an appointment for January 5th to get my knee looked at. Kind of in a holding pattern till then.
Daily Wrap
Return to boring posts. Work, kiddo, dinner, relax, ice knee.
Food was good 1138 consumed, 0 burned, 92 below goal. Yummy pork chops and green salad for dinner.
Daily Wrap
Not much going on today. First day back in the office, so just a little catch up, but not too bad. Even though I haven’t run in a while my knee has been bugging me, last night I woke up in the middle of the night in a lot of pain, it felt like I had just run 5 miles on it at the height of what I thought was IT band stuff. Today it hurt a couple of times getting in or out of a chair, and hurt...
Back home, back to normalcy
Back home from San Diego. I managed to catch a cold while I was down there, so I pretty much just worked and hung around the hotel. I did go out to dinner one night, but other than that it was just me and The Sopranos on my tablet I picked up on Black Friday.
I figured the lack of physical activity and constantly eating out would lead to some weight gain. Last week I was 188.4, and this week...

Hi there
Home for a day, then back on the road for work. Knee felt stiff and sore again following my last run and after the drive down to California, so I took a week off from running. Thanksgiving was good, a week of vacation was good, did gain since my weigh in two weeks ago 186.2 then, 188.4 now. Just a quick post as I’m fighting with the computer trying desperately to get it squared away for...
Vacation
Whew I made it. The next 10 days off, then 4 days of travel for work. Said goodbye to my desk for the next 2 weeks. Probably won’t want to go back.
Daily Wrap take 2
I already wrote one daily wrap. I made excuses and said I didn’t want to run, and had decided not to. Then I sucked it up and ran. It did suck, pretty wet, windy, and chilly. I was tired, sluggish, and not feeling it. But now that its done I’m glad I went.
Couch to 10k Week 9, Day 2

Walk 2
Repeat run walk for 6 times total

Fine
Now that I posted that I feel like a whiner, so I’m going to run. See you in about 90 minutes with a recap.

Should have ran today, just no time. I’ve seen the post from Ben, today about always having time, it’s just not always realistic. Work, kid, feed him, swim class, dinner for us, 9:30 wet rainy tired drained, sorry just not happening tonight.
Calories were close, 1460 consumed, none burned, 230 over goal.
Triathlon Panic Attacks →
I don’t post this to scare anyone thinking about triathlons. It was just interesting to me since its basically what happened to me when I attempted a tri earlier this year. Pack of people, already nervous for an open water swim, one little thing goes wrong (kick to the face in my case) and everything ramps up. I’ll still try again next year with a better understanding of what...
Spotify guilty pleasures playlist
I love spotify, its so much fun to find old music I wouldn’t remember about otherwise. Right now I’m working on a guilty pleasures playlist of crappy poppy music from the mid to late 90s into the early 2000s. Any suggestions? Its pretty light on content right now, so I take to tumblr, what are your guilty pleasure songs?

It was a swim day today, and one of my co-workers is a swimmer. So I was talking to him and he asked what kind of a swim I was doing for workouts and offered to put one together for me. I took him up on it and did it tonight.

4x50 yards free
4x50 yards pull buoy

Pretty good day. When I got off work I felt tired, and thought about how Nathan and I were going to hang out till Tiffany got off work, then rush to eat dinner, then rush to swim class, next thing you know it’ll be 9pm and I’ll be able to get ready to run. I just felt tired and that felt unappealing.
But I did it.
Couch to 10k, week 9 Day 1.

Covered the bike ride earlier, not a lot else going on so straight to the calories. Ah, good ol’ calories….
1510 consumed, 308 burned, 1202 net, 28 below goal. Doing pretty good on the calorie front since refocusing.
Looking at the next couple weeks coming up and wondering how it’s going to go, or how to approach it. Going out of town for Thanksgiving (Weds-Sun), then the...
Goodnight bike
It’s been a while since I road my bike. The days are shorter, weather is worse, my wife gets home from work at a quarter to 7 so I’m home with Nathan. It just hasn’t worked out.
So tonight when Tiffany’s grandparents asked if they could watch Nathan before going South for the winter I was pretty excited to get a bike ride in. Dropped him off after work, rushed home,...

Quick because it’s late and I didn’t workout! Just a family day. So into the calories: Consumed 1219, burned 0, net 0, 11 below goal.

Weekly Weigh-in
Great week! To the numbers!
Heaviest Weight: 234.8
Starting Weight: 192.4
Last Week: 192.4
Current Weight: 186.4
Lost in the last week: 6lbs
Lbs till goal: 21.4
6 lbs in a week is crazy. Some of that is eating poorly right before restarting, and some of it is that initial water weight you lose whenever you kick it in to high gear. Regardless, I’m pretty happy with those numbers,...
